The evidence in this figure clearly shows that when using a competing product, you can’t rate what you cannot see. With our product, you can clearly see, and then clearly rate, the deposit color. The most powerful advantage attributed to Standard Heater Tubes is this ability to enhance the accurate determination of fuel deposit colors. Such a color determination is the undisputed and fundamental purpose of testing via ASTM D3241.
Incidentally, if you had a “camera” rather than a person making the color determinations, and the camera showed one tube as revealing more “red” than another, would you conclude that a camera is more trustworthy than a real person to evaluate tube deposits? Moral: beware of anyone proposing use of a video camera to evaluate tubes, deposit colors, or fuels. The judgment of an objective scientist in this matter is both essential and indispensable.
Although equivalent tube performance among suppliers is a demonstrated fact, there are otherwise intelligent people who contend that tube appearance is somehow an important or even a critical tube property. Let’s be clear: there is no data to suggest this, and in fact the appearance of our commercial product hasn’t even been objectively evaluated in comparison with another product.
Competing products are produced by imputing millions of tiny abrasions or scratches onto the tube surface. These scratch marks are then sometimes offered as evidence of a superior finish, as if a scratched surface is somehow beneficial or “good.” In fact, the opposite is the case. A scratched surface offers nothing at all by way of chemical or mechanical advantage, as data shows quite clearly. Scratching the tube surface does have an optical effect on tube appearance, and it isn’t at all good.
The net effect of scratching a surface is to enhance and increase the diffusion or scattering of available light into wild, random, directions. As a consequence, the light available to your eye is diminished rather than increased. Overall, it becomes more difficult to even see the tube surface or the deposit upon it. This makes the deposit rating job even more difficult than it already is! This disadvantage is entirely an optical effect due to lighting; one that is completely avoidable. Thus, the notion that a scratched surface is somehow “good” in D3241 testing is only a ruse perpetuated upon unsuspecting users of D3241. The scratches are a weak effort to hide an obvious deficiency of a competing product.
The evidence is now too clear. Unwholesome scratches can be seen for what they are through a low power microscope. Scattering of available light away from the eye of the beholder of tubes and fuel-related deposits offers nothing but a hard-to-see surface.
In contrast, our tubes aren‘t pre-scratched. We make them that way on purpose. An optically superior finish makes the deposit rating job user friendly and as easy as it can possibly be. (They work great with non-visual rating methods, too, affirming that deposit formation proceeds entirely through a thermal mechanism and has nothing at all to do with either optics or catalysis by an inert material). There is nothing to fear in the appearance of our clean, fresh, new, tube.
